We do sincerely hope that those of you checking in will feel free to leave
comments and continue to follow our amazing journey with the Garden
of the Sleeping Angels.
Our negligence in maintaining communication via blog is in absolutely
no way a reflection of how active our non profit is.
We currently have close to 160 babies and children memorialized
throughout our fourteen gardens. For those of you recently joining our site,
and interested in our history: The seeds of remembrance and hope were
initially planted in 2012, with our status of non profit obtained in 2014. We
are blessed to have almost ten picturesque acres of land, abutting wetlands
and a small lake. Upon purchase in 1996, we undertook the huge challenge
of clearing the mostly overgrown areas surrounding the existing home. I
won’t bore you with the daunting aspect of it, but the results are pretty
amazing: clearing underbrush amidst clumps of trees revealed beautiful
areas perfect for shade gardens; more open areas were so appropriate for
annuals and perennials. This paints a picture of what is now what we are to offer as caretakers of the GSA. Our families have shown us what they need, and we try to listen and change our presentation and schedule to fit them.
We’re able to offer a lovely back drop for memorial services, invite families
to place their memorials in the garden of their choice and then visit when
able. Where at our onset, we offered open gardens through the growing
season (Minnesota’s ‘green time’ is mostly May through October), we
recognize that grief continues year-long, so have a Christmas tree up during the holiday season, where ornaments can be placed to remember little ones. We also celebrate National Pregnancy and Infant Loss month each October, with emphasis on holding a Wave of Light on the eve of October 15th, lighting a candle for each of the memorials placed here.
As a non profit, we attempt to provide services at little cost to our families
(currently each ceramic angel individually made by artist Nina Guertin is
given free of charge). This means fund raising, and thus far we focus on
asking for help during the traditional Giving Tuesday events, plus now have an annual weekend plant sale the first weekend in June.
